Crucifixion – A Roman form of execution where the executed person would be hung on a cross made of wood with nails stuck through their hands and feet then their legs were broken to speed up death.
Resurrection – Coming back to life after dying
This IS a TRUE story!
Jesus Christ, fully human and fully God, was praying to his Father, the Lord, in the Garden of Gethsemane in Israel. He invited three of his twelve disciples to come and pray with Him but each time he checked on them, they were asleep. Suddenly one of the disciples, (not the ones praying) Judas Iscariot appeared with the religious leaders (they hated Jesus) and their soldiers. They seized Jesus, when all of a sudden His disciple, Peter, cut off the ear of the High Priest’s servant! Jesus picked his ear back up and placed it on the man’s head and he was healed.
The religious leaders took Jesus to their court and mocked Him, spat at him, and eventually decided to take him to the Roman governor, Pontious Pilate’s court. Pilate questioned Jesus and found no evil in him. After all, Jesus never once sinned or had any evil ways in him. Pilate sent Jesus and the uproaring religious leaders to King Herod’s court because Jesus and the religious leaders were not Roman.
Herod listened to the religious leaders and thought that Jesus wasn’t committing a crime, He just thought that Jesus was crazy for calling Himself a king. Jesus was a King though, a King of Heaven because He is God’s Son. Herod sent Jesus back to Pilate’ court.
Pilate brought out a murderer, Barabbas and asked the people if they wanted Jesus or Barabbas to be released. Everyone yelled and screamed for Barabbas’s release because they wanted Jesus dead. Pilate did not want to kill Jesus so he said that they would beat Jesus to try to please the people. The Roman soldiers severely beat Him with whips and scourges. A scourge is a whip with many ropes, each with a piece of very sharp metal or a nail tied to it. They beat him almost to the death. He was brought back out to the religious leaders and they were not happy. They were causing a great uproar and demanded crucifixion. Pilate agreed because he was scared that Julius Caesar would take away his position of leadership. They made Jesus carry up his cross all the way to Golgotha, the hill where he would die. He fell down three times and then a stranger off the street had to carry Jesus’ cross because he was too weak.
Up on the hill, they laid Jesus on the cross after placing a crown of thorns on His head and hammered nails through His hands and feet. They stood the cross up and Jesus hung there, dying. Jesus died to be a perfect, atoning sacrifice for every sin committed by all people. He died so we don’t have to. If we truly believe that He died on the cross and that He was the Son of The Living God, them we can be saved and go to heaven when we die. Jesus hung there, and eventually one of the Roman soldiers plunged a spear into Jesus and ruptured His heart, spraying out blood and water. This all happened on Good Friday.
On Easter, after being sealed in a tomb that was guarded by soldiers, an Angel of the Lord rolled the stone away and the resurrected Jesus walked out. He rose above the clouds and up to Heaven. He had paid the price for our sins.
“When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!””
Matthew 27:54 NIV
“The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.”
Matthew 28:5-6 NIV
He is Risen, Happy Easter Y’all!
